Pain Forum

The Pain Forum was launched in 2000 after the recognition that pain was of interest to a large number of healthcare professionals in the greater Bath area. These meetings have been well supported by clinicians in the local area. We invite world leaders in pain research to present their work and discuss developments. These speakers are chosen for the high quality of their research and their ability to communicate it well.

Pain Forum is a quarterly, free public lecture series that we have maintained and hosted for more than 20 years.

We host high profile speakers from research and clinical practice in pain. We anticipate that our audience will be professionals, but anyone is welcome.

The lectures are delivered online via Zoom, to allow maximum access across the country and beyond. If you are interested, keep an eye on X (Twitter!) @BCPSBath, or email us at ruh-tr.RNHRDPainEducation@nhs.net to get on the mailing list.

This lecture is presented with the Bristol and Bath Chronic Pain Health Improvement Team, a regional group of specialist researchers and clinicians in the field of chronic pain.

Upcoming Presentations

Tuesday 16th December 2025, 4:00-5:00pm

Epidemiology of chronic pain across BNSSG and Implementation of a community-based Pain Management Programme to improve clinical outcomes with cost effectiveness

Professor of Molecular Medicine at Bristol University and Consultant in Pain Medicine at the Bristol Royal Infirmary. His principal academic roles are as Director of Bristol Health Partners AHSC and Director of NIHR Bristol Clinical Research Facility.

Bio: My research is focused on the epidemiology of chronic pain (CP) which represents a major global burden and has a UK prevalence of 43%. I led: (a) the consortium which generated the UK Biobank CP phenotyping questionnaire, identifying 98,000 participants with CP, and (b) an analysis of CP using the Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire system-wide dataset of ~800,000 adults. Results demonstrated CP is the second most impactful condition on health services after anxiety/depression, and the most impactful in the over 50s. It is common in women and more deprived populations, with a significant under-representation of all non-white groups/communities. I am currently focused on delivery at scale of pain management programmes in local neighbourhood hubs close to where patients live (rather than in hospital settings) and much earlier in the patient CP journey, maximising participation and minimising disability and medicalisation.
We look forward to inviting her to present to the Bath Pain Forum. We will look to record the talk so if you cannot make it on the night or want to watch it back, you can. We will aim to send out the link by the end of the week following the talk.

If you are not already on our mailing list to hear about future talks then please email us at
ruh-tr.RNHRDPainEducation@nhs.net to be added.
