Research and Innovation

We are a national specialist NHS unit with a long history of producing clinically relevant research.

Treating chronic pain is difficult and there is always a need for new ideas to produce better clinical outcomes, both for adults and for adolescents. We aim to help understand how chronic pain causes so much distress and disability and then to understand the mechanisms behind effective treatment. We also research how to extend our expertise to other conditions such as diabetic pain.

Research is built in to every part of our activity, and all adults, adolescents and parents attending our service will all have the opportunity to contribute to our research efforts. We are building an increasing team of research active staff, supported by internal and external funding, along with collaborators at the University of the West of England and the University of Bath.

We usually share our research in scientific journals and at key national and international meetings such as the British Pain Society meeting and the International Symposium on Pediatric Pain.
